In general, the drive belt on your Voyager does a lot of things. It runs the compressor for the air conditioner, the power steering pump, and the alternator. Some engines have two belts to do these jobs; some use only one.
The manual recommends inspecting the belt(s) every 15,000 miles or every 12 months. Things to look for include the following: fraying; cracks; separation (of the drive belt “piles”); “glazing,” in other words a shiny area on the belt; streaks on the sidewall of the belt; oil soaking; and breaks.
Obviously a broken, separated, frayed or cracked belt should be replaced immediately. Glazing on the top of the belt or streaks on the belt’s sidewall may mean that the belt is not adjusted properly. An oil soaked belt means oil leaking from the engine, transmission or perhaps the power steering fluid reservoir. Have your reliable mechanic track down and stop any oil leak as soon as possible.
To prevent down time for your Voyager, it’s good to have a spare belt. And this is the place to buy. We have serpentine belts or V-belts, ribbed or not.
